a shabby little bookcase

Last week I picked up this little bookcase from a family friend. It was in desperate need of a makeover. I have to admit I almost passed on it just because I knew it would be a lot of work to get the old paint off. But I do love the lines and shape of it, so I was up for the challenge. Here it is, in all its finger painted glory...

I started out by giving the whole thing a good coat of Kilz spray primer. The oil base will keep anything from bleeding through. I stripped both sides of the bookcase because the stripes were raised and they would show through.

Ahh so much better....

  1. That is a very sweet bookcase. What a lot of work but so worth the effort.

  2. The lines of this piece are so sweet and then the color you selected just compliments that so well! The original view from the back was funny, someone had some fun!! Janell

  3. What a great makeover - the fingerpainting made me chuckle! =) And I love your crown!

  4. Found you on Fresh Coat Friday! Great makeover. I'm glad you didn't shy away from a challenge.

  5. beautiful! I heart those scalloped edges:) I also found you on Fresh Coat Friday, you did an amazing job, going to go check out your other projects too!

  6. Love the shape that shelf has... it's lovely.

  7. What a lovely piece! You have no idea how rarely I come across bookcases, and my request list for them is miles long so that is an amazing find! It looks fresh and new now and you did an excellent job styling it (that crown is just precious!!)
Can't wait to see what else you are up to, and thanks for sharing in our first Fresh Coat Friday!!!
