trash to treasure

Last weekend Mr O' was going to pick up some dinner and spotted this hutch on the corner of our street. He called me right away and I just had to run down and see it! While the piece was very beat up I knew it had a lot of character and could be transformed. Here are some "before" pics. You can see how scratched up it was.

And here is the after. We liked it so much we decided to keep it. (I had planned to sell it) I absolutely loved the details of the old hardware so I cleaned them up and used a little brushed nickel spray paint on them to give them some new life!

celing fan makeover

So when we first moved into our house everything was brass. Every knob, fixture, hinge and ceiling fan. Now, if you know me, I HATE brass. So gradually over the last 11 months I've been switching out everything! One of my more recent projects was to tackle the ceiling fans. We have three of the same brass fans throughout our home and it didn't really make sense to get rid of perfectly good fans just b/c of the color. So, Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze here we come!


I started by taking down the blades and taking off the brass hardware. Then I taped around the base of the fan w/o taking it down! I cut up some trash bags to tape to the ceiling to protect it while I sprayed. After two coats of the bronze spray paint I put everything back together! Here's the finished product. Amazing difference isn't it. And only for the cost of one can of spray paint! Next up I'm going to do the one in our bedroom in a brushed nickel...

rocker

A few weeks ago my dad offered me a wooden rocking chair that belonged to my grandmother. I was beyond excited to have it in my home.... but the first words out of my mouth were "can I paint it"? As you can see, the rocker is that traditional black lacquered with gold painted details and it doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of my decor.


With my dad's permission (lol) I sanded, primed and carefully applied coats of antique white paint. (Free from Glidden!!) A little poly and a few pillows is all it needed to be complete!

I hope one day it finds a home in a nursery, but until then it'll be perfect in our bedroom for Mr O' to sit on while putting on his shoes.... since I always have clothes on the bench that was originally for this purpose. Oh well.
